Tulum, Quintana Roo — Lucha libre, Mexico’s iconic form of professional wrestling, remains active in Tulum thanks to the efforts of independent promoters who have sustained the sport as a cultural and entertainment option despite a lack of institutional support.
Andrés, a wrestler known in the ring as “Lady Pink Sexy,” has nearly 18 years of experience as a professional luchador and over 15 years organizing events in the area. He said that during this time, there has been no consistent backing from authorities to help the activity grow.
He noted that unlike destinations such as Playa del Carmen and Cancún, which have proper venues and organized competitions, Tulum lacks infrastructure and training programs, limiting the development of new talent.
“There are no spaces or projects to teach children or young people,” he said.
Despite these conditions, interest among younger generations persists. The promoter currently trains several youths, including a 12-year-old who already participates in events, reflecting that lucha libre continues to generate enthusiasm in the community.
Andrés believes that with greater institutional support, the discipline could solidify as a sporting and social alternative, offering young people options that help steer them away from risky behaviors.
Beyond its athletic nature, he highlighted lucha libre’s value as part of Mexican cultural identity, recalling that events have often served as platforms for social support by collecting supplies for communities affected by emergencies.
Currently, event organization relies primarily on private resources, covering expenses like transportation, lodging, and payments to wrestlers, without public funding.
As part of upcoming activities, he announced an event on March 21 featuring recognized figures from the national and international circuit, including Zumbido, a former member of the AAA promotion, and a wrestler from Canada.
Despite the limitations, organizers continue to promote events regularly, aiming to keep lucha libre alive in Tulum and expand recreational options in the municipality.
