Playa del Carmen Residents Report Alleged Dog Neglect, Criticize Animal Control Response

Two dogs reportedly left without proper care inside a residence in the Marsella 2 neighborhood of Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Residents of the Marsella 2 neighborhood have reported two dogs allegedly abandoned and mistreated inside a local home, expressing frustration over what they describe as a slow response from animal control authorities.

According to neighbors, the dogs have been left without consistent access to food and water for an extended period. They filed a report with the Animal Control, Assistance and Zoonosis Center (CENCAAZ) some time ago but say no effective action has been taken to remove the animals.

Faced with the lack of intervention, neighbors have taken it upon themselves to feed the dogs periodically to prevent them from going completely without sustenance.

During a previous visit by inspectors to the address, the actual condition of the dogs could not be verified because the animals were allegedly hidden or relocated by the property owners, residents claim. On that occasion, officials only left a document for the owners to appear at CENCAAZ offices to declare the animals’ situation, which did not lead to a more thorough verification.

The situation has persisted over time. Neighbors indicated that one of the female dogs, which was pregnant, has since given birth on the same property, prompting a new report to the relevant agency.

However, they say the response they received was limited to stating that a rescue would eventually be coordinated, without setting a concrete date or confirming an immediate visit to the site.

Residents allege the suspected owners only visit sporadically, approximately every 15 days, without guaranteeing basic conditions for the animals. They believe the dogs may have been left to guard the property.

Given these circumstances, neighbors maintain the dogs remain in what they describe as inadequate conditions, increasing community concern. Despite this, they say no definitive action for their removal has been finalized.

For its part, CENCAAZ stated it will go to the location as soon as possible to address the case. However, as of now, no intervention has been recorded that would allow direct verification of the animals’ current state.

According to versions from the reporters themselves, the same agency reportedly acknowledged that the dogs should be removed due to the conditions in which they are allegedly found, though that measure has not been executed.
