Mahahual, Q. Roo.- Environmental activists in Mahahual have reported the troubling discovery of a green or white sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) with sliced fins. This unfortunate incident, possibly caused by human activities, occurred on the shores of the Grand Costa Maya. Despite federal laws protecting these creatures, sea turtle meat is still consumed illegally by many.
It's important to highlight that those responsible for such actions could face severe penalties. The illegal capture, harm, or killing of any turtle or marine mammal, as well as the collection or storage of their products or by-products, can result in prison sentences ranging from one to nine years. Additionally, fines equivalent to 300 to three thousand days can be imposed. This also applies to anyone who captures, alters, hoards, transports, or harms specimens of aquatic species during a closed season.
