TULUM — The Maya blue pigment, considered one of the most emblematic in Mesoamerican history, remains vibrant thanks to the work of master artisan Luis May Ku, who recently imparted a special ceramics course. During the session, he shared the ancestral technique for recreating this unique tone, which is recognized worldwide for its resistance and durability.

The course was part of initiatives aimed at disseminating and preserving the cultural heritage of Tulum and the region, introducing new generations and visitors to traditional artistic practices. Participants were able to learn firsthand about the artisanal process used to obtain this color, which has been employed since pre-Hispanic times in murals, codices, and ceremonial pieces.

Maya blue is valued not only for its chromatic intensity but also for its ability to remain unaltered over centuries, making it a symbol of the cultural grandeur of the Maya peoples.

According to the organizers, participation in such activities helps more people understand the historical and artistic value of the pigment. It also serves to recognize the role of artisans and masters like May Ku, who dedicate their work to conserving and transmitting knowledge inherited over centuries.

The experience not only allowed attendees to connect with an ancestral legacy but also opened the door to new contemporary expressions, where Maya blue becomes a bridge between the past and the present. Through initiatives of this kind, Tulum reinforces its position as a cultural reference point, beyond its tourist appeal, by highlighting the richness and ongoing relevance of Maya tradition in the artistic and community spheres.
