Chetumal Craft Competitions: 300K Prizes

Chetumal, Mexico — Registration remains open for the "Chuuy K´Káab" Embroidery and Drawn Thread Work competition and the "Deja que te lo cuenten mis manos" (Let My Hands Tell You the Story) Handicrafts competition for 2025, which together will distribute a total prize pool of 300,000 pesos.

According to the respective announcements, the VIII State Embroidery and Drawn Thread Work Competition of Quintana Roo, "Chuuy K´Káab 2025," will award 19 prizes from a total purse of 100,000 pesos. The participation categories are: hand embroidery using counted thread and canvas techniques; embroidery using pedal machines and traditional techniques; works featuring the application of natural dyes on threads and fabrics; traditional ceremonial clothing; and traditional garments with innovation.

The XXVIII State Handicrafts Competition of Quintana Roo, "Deja que te lo cuenten mis manos" 2025, will award 25 prizes from a total purse of 200,000 pesos. The participation categories are textiles, woodwork, shells and marine materials, plant fibers, and other crafts.

Artisans born in Quintana Roo, or Mexican adults who have resided in the state for more than five years, are eligible to participate. They must be dedicated to creating works using traditional techniques, materials, and designs, as well as new design proposals that preserve the technical elements and materials of the ethnolinguistic groups that produce them. Participants must also be dedicated to creating handmade objects using traditional and innovative techniques, materials, and designs characteristic of their communities.

Further details for both state competitions are available on the website and social media channels of the Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes del Estado de Quintana Roo (ICA). The winning artisans will be announced on October 15. An awards ceremony for the winners of both competitions will be held on October 31 of this year at the "Lic. Javier Rojo Gómez" Library in Chetumal.
