Kantunilkin, Mexico — The private sector is seeking to diversify its tourist offerings in Quintana Roo and, in doing so, promote sustainable destinations in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas. This was announced by the president of the Holbox Hotel Association, Christian Stenta, following the signing of a collaboration agreement with the non-profit organization Kanché.
"This alliance is a great opportunity for Holbox to establish itself as a leading destination in sustainability, authenticity, and territorial responsibility," detailed Christian Stenta.
The agreement aims to coordinate efforts between the hotel sector and rural communities to diversify the tourist offerings and promote practices that contribute to a better distribution of the benefits of tourism in the region.
This signing represents a joint commitment to diversify the tourist offerings of the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, reduce pressure on the ecosystems of Holbox Island, and consolidate "Kilich Kab" or "Sacred World" as a high-value-added biocultural destination.
"Regenerative tourism is not just a global trend; it is an urgent necessity to protect our fragile ecosystems and strengthen the social fabric that sustains them," said Liliana García Ramírez, executive director of Kanché.
More than 30 Mayan community enterprises are driving this initiative, which plans authentic tourist routes between the island, the jungle, and the colorful towns of the continental zone.
The agreement contemplates concrete actions such as: the creation of routes and tourist packages that integrate beach, living culture, and jungle; the linking with local agroecological producers for the responsible supply of hotel inputs; the promotion of good sustainability and circular economy practices in tourism operations; and the technical and methodological support from Kanché to strengthen the local value chain.
