COZUMEL, QRoo — Local and visiting families enjoyed a special day at the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park, an event organized by the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) that combined recreational and educational activities to strengthen the bond with the island's natural and cultural heritage.

Attendees took part in interpretive tours aboard boats on the X'tacún Lagoon, where they observed the central mogote that houses a freshwater spring and serves as a natural refuge for birds and other species. They also participated in explanations about the mangrove restoration efforts that the FPMC is promoting in collaboration with the community, social groups, and academics, with the goal of ensuring a more sustainable future for Cozumel.

Juanita Alonso Marrufo, the general director of the FPMC, emphasized that these experiences foster coexistence in harmony with the environment, in line with the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.

The director and deputy director of Punta Sur, Jesús Benavides Andrade and Héctor González Cortés, thanked the citizens for their participation and explained the relevance of the Mayan vestige known as El Caracol, which was constructed during the Late Postclassic period (1200-1500 AD). This site served as a coastal marker, a guide for navigation, a link with the rest of the island, and also fulfilled archaeoastronomical functions.

Although cloud cover prevented the observation of the solar alignment on the structure, the families enjoyed a memorable sunset and deepened their knowledge about the history and architectural values of El Caracol.
