Cancún, Quintana Roo — Authorities from the Benito Juárez Municipality rescued a dog in Region 255 on the morning of Saturday, August 23, thanks to coordination between the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic and the support of local residents. The animal was immediately transported to the Directorate of Animal Protection and Welfare, where it is receiving medical attention and will remain under protective custody.
The dog, a light brown female, was found in a state of severe malnutrition, described as nearly cadaverous in appearance. Neighbors reported that the canine had survived solely because they threw food and water to it using ropes from their patios. The dog's name is not yet known. Its rescue underscores the importance of reporting cases of animal abuse in the city.
Yamili Góngora Manrique, Director of Animal Protection and Welfare for Benito Juárez, stated that so far this year, her department has received more than 1,600 reports of animal abuse. Half of these cases have been forwarded to Civic Courts for resolution. Currently, six investigations for animal cruelty are underway with the State Attorney General's Office (FGE). These cases are related to serious incidents, including machete attacks, animals being thrown from buildings, and sexual assaults on dogs.
The official explained that the municipal agency focuses on the care of the animals, while neighbor disputes are channeled to the Civic Courts.
