Playa del Carmen Cracks Down on Street Vending

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — The Secretariat of Economic Development and the Directorate of Oversight and Collections are conducting joint operations to regulate street vending and maintain order in the city, according to the head of the Secretariat, Antón Bojórquez.

The official explained that after focusing on the city center, the patrols now cover various points across the city to remove unlicensed street vendors. He emphasized that the intention is to make this order permanent.

"Between 25 and 30 street vendors were removed without the need to confiscate their merchandise, as they ultimately understood the purpose of the operation," Bojórquez commented.

Bojórquez specified that weekly patrols are conducted in neighborhoods and subdivisions, where vendors found operating irregularly are invited to visit the Directorate of Industry and Commerce to regularize their status.

He announced that the Committee for Street Vending will be reinstated in the coming days and could hold its first meeting in early September. He assured that this committee will work publicly and transparently to determine who will be granted permits.
