Chetumal, MX — The political group Somos México, which aims to compete as an opposition party in the 2027 elections, will hold a new district assembly in the state of Quintana Roo, this time in Chetumal.
Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo, leader of the organization and former head of the now-defunct Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), announced the event via a video shared on social media. The assembly, scheduled for this Sunday at 8 a.m., will take place at the “Las Palmas” banquet hall, located at 132 Cozumel Avenue in the Barrio Bravo neighborhood.
“We will achieve success because Somos México is the citizen force that will rescue our democracy, peace, and freedoms in Mexico,” Acosta Naranjo stated.
This marks the second such assembly in the state, following an earlier one held in Cancún. The group emerged from the so-called “Pink Tide” (Marea Rosa), a citizen movement that supported Xóchitl Gálvez in the recent presidential elections. With this base, it seeks to formalize itself as the national political party Somos México.
The organization’s objectives include affiliating at least 260,000 people within a year and conducting a minimum of 200 district assemblies, each requiring the participation of at least 300 individuals.
Prominent figures associated with the initiative include:
- Emilio Álvarez Icaza and Carlos Navarrete, former members of the PRD.
- Enrique de la Madrid, a former contender for the national leadership of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).
- Edmundo Jacobo, former secretary-general of the National Electoral Institute (INE).
- Gustavo Madero, former leader of the National Action Party (PAN).
- Cecilia Soto, a former presidential candidate for the Labor Party (PT).
The group aims to position itself as a viable opposition force ahead of the 2027 electoral process.
