Cancún, Mexico — Dengue remains an active threat in Quintana Roo, with official data from the federal Ministry of Health revealing a concerning spike in fatalities. As of July 14 (epidemiological week 28), 76 confirmed cases have been reported this year, including two deaths, raising the fatality rate to 4.44%—significantly higher than the 1.5% recorded in 2024.
Cases on the Rise and Epidemic Zones
The Ministry’s report breaks down the confirmed cases into the following classifications:
- Dengue without severe symptoms (DNG): 31 cases
- Dengue with warning signs (DCSA): 41 cases
- Severe dengue (DG): 4 cases
While the total number of cases is notably lower than the same period last year (76 compared to 841), the fatality rate has more than tripled, alarming health authorities.
Municipal Breakdown
Othón P. Blanco leads in both total infections and incidence rates, reporting 16 non-severe cases and 12 cases with warning signs or severe symptoms. This translates to 5.42 and 4.07 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively.
Cozumel follows with six non-severe cases and four with warning signs, reflecting incidence rates of 5.18 and 3.45 per 100,000. Puerto Morelos recorded two non-severe cases, while Solidaridad reported three in total.
The Ministry clarified that these rates were calculated using population projections from the National Population Council (Conapo), providing a clearer picture of the outbreak’s impact beyond raw case numbers.
Southern Quintana Roo in Epidemiological Red Zone
The epidemiological map included in the report designates Othón P. Blanco and other southern areas as epidemic zones, while northern Quintana Roo remains largely in the safety zone.
Health officials urged residents to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, use repellent, and seek immediate medical attention for symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, or bleeding—particularly in high-risk areas.
