Mexico Launches Digital Visa System for Faster Applications

Cancún, Mexico — The Mexican government has published new guidelines in the Federal Official Gazette (DOF) outlining a fully digital visa application process, marking a significant shift in immigration procedures. The updated regulations, issued by the Secretariat of the Interior (Segob) and the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), aim to streamline consular services while enforcing stricter document verification.

Key Changes in Visa Processing

Under the revised guidelines, visa applications will now be processed electronically, eliminating the need for physical photographs and printed documents. The SRE will collect biometric data—including fingerprints and iris scans—along with digital signatures and certified electronic records.

A newly introduced electronic visa system, operated directly by the SRE, will allow eligible foreign nationals to obtain visas entirely online. The system applies to travelers from countries designated by Mexico who intend to enter by air as non-remunerated visitors.

“Visa applications may now be submitted electronically in cases of international reciprocity or when deemed in the interest of the Mexican government,” states the DOF document.

The National Migration Institute (INM) will also accept digital submissions for visitor visas from foreign nationals arriving by air. The electronic visa is designed to enhance document security and portability, complying with Mexico’s Migration Law.

Additional Requirements and Implementation

Foreign public documents must now be apostilled or legalized and translated into Spanish if issued in another language. Authorities will intensify background checks and document authentication to prevent fraud.

The guidelines take effect 15 days after their DOF publication. The SRE has 180 days from the effective date to fully implement the electronic visa system.

The move follows broader efforts to modernize Mexico’s immigration infrastructure while maintaining rigorous security standards.
