Singapore — Mexican artistic swimmer Diego Villalobos secured the country’s first medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, earning bronze in the solo technical event. The 20-year-old athlete scored 238.1600 points with his expressive routine set to La Maza, marking his fourth career medal at a world championship.
A Historic Performance
Villalobos’ podium finish places him alongside Mexican diving legends Osmar Olvera and Paola Espinosa, who also hold four world championship medals. The gold medal went to Aleksandr Maltsev, competing under the World Aquatics banner, with 251.7133 points, while Spain’s Dennis González took silver with 241.1667.
“It’s emotional to say goodbye to this routine, but I’m happy and satisfied. I’ll return with a new one. Swimming solos is my favorite,” Villalobos said after the event.
A Rising Star’s Legacy
Villalobos’ previous world championship medals include silver in the mixed duet free event at Fukuoka 2023 and two bronces in Doha 2024 (mixed duet technical and mixed duet free). His latest achievement further solidifies Mexico’s presence in artistic swimming.
The championships continue with Villalobos set to compete in four additional events: team free, team acrobatic, solo free, and mixed duet technical, where he will partner with Joana Jiménez after previously trialing with Regina Alférez. The team free final, featuring both Villalobos and González, will take place on Sunday evening.
