Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) has confirmed that the beaches of Quintana Roo meet safety standards for recreational use during the summer 2025 season. The announcement follows water quality monitoring conducted across 29 beaches in popular destinations, including Cancún, Riviera Maya, Costa Maya, and the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres.

Water Quality Exceeds Safety Standards

Laboratory analysis revealed that the majority of the monitored beaches contained between 10 and 16 enterococci (fecal bacteria) per 100 milliliters of seawater—well below COFEPRIS's maximum permissible limit of 200 enterococci per 100 milliliters. Playa del Niño registered slightly higher levels at 30 enterococci per 100 milliliters but remains within safe limits.

Real-Time Monitoring via "Playas MX" App

Travelers can verify water quality conditions using the official "Playas MX" mobile application, which provides up-to-date bacteriological data for beaches nationwide. The tool allows users to confirm whether their chosen destinations are safe for swimming and other recreational activities.

Quintana Roo’s Commitment to Clean Beaches

The results reaffirm Quintana Roo’s ongoing efforts to maintain pristine shorelines ahead of the summer tourist season, which is expected to draw over two million visitors. All beaches sampled by COFEPRIS were deemed suitable for public use.

National Findings Highlight Regional Disparities

Nationwide, COFEPRIS tested 2,300 beach sites. While most Mexican coastal destinations met safety criteria, elevated contamination levels were detected in parts of Baja California, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Oaxaca, exceeding permissible thresholds.

  • 7 in Cancún
  • 9 in Cozumel
