Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — The government of Playa del Carmen has launched the first Mediation Center in Puerto Aventuras, part of a broader strategy to bring civic justice closer to local communities. Operated by the Secretariat of Civic Justice and Human Coexistence, the center is now open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., offering voluntary mediation services to resolve conflicts between neighbors without judicial intervention.

A Space for Dialogue and Conflict Resolution

Candy Joana Mendoza Ramírez, head of the Secretariat, emphasized that the center aims to provide peaceful solutions to neighborhood disputes through structured mediation processes.

“We invite all residents of Puerto Aventuras to visit, inquire about our services, and take advantage of what we offer. This center is for anyone with a conflict who wishes to resolve it peacefully, without resorting to legal proceedings,” Mendoza Ramírez explained.

The center has already begun receiving requests for basic legal guidance, prompting ongoing staff training to efficiently direct each case to the appropriate authorities. A full-time lawyer has also been assigned to the facility.

“Mayor Estefanía Mercado’s directive has been clear: we must be accessible to the public and prevent them from wasting time and resources navigating bureaucratic offices. That’s why every case we receive is carefully reviewed and properly referred,” the official added.

Addressing Common Community Issues

The Mediation Center focuses on resolving disputes through dialogue between involved parties. The most frequent complaints involve animal welfare, waste disposal, and excessive noise from parties or gatherings, particularly in rapidly expanding residential areas.

“We want the community to know they can come to us before a disagreement escalates. If both parties are willing, mediation is an effective and free tool to settle these disputes,” Mendoza Ramírez stated.

The Secretariat clarified that participation in mediation is entirely voluntary and does not involve legal judgments or penalties. Instead, trained mediators facilitate discussions where both sides can express their viewpoints and collaboratively reach solutions.

Promoting a Culture of Peace

The Secretariat also announced plans to use official social media channels to keep residents informed about the center’s activities, special hours, and additional services.

“Our commitment is to continue fostering a culture of peace, coexistence, and mutual respect among neighbors,” Mendoza Ramírez concluded.

The initiative underscores the local government’s efforts to strengthen community relations and provide accessible, non-adversarial conflict resolution mechanisms.
