Chetumal, Mexico — Following years of uncertainty over the ownership of the Costa Maya cruise pier after businessman Isaak Hamui’s concession was revoked three years ago, local residents and tourism service providers met with representatives of Royal Caribbean, who confirmed the company has taken administrative control of the facility.

Royal Caribbean’s Acquisition Confirmed

Juan Manuel Lanz Itzincab, secretary general of the local taxi union, stated that Jay Schnaider, Royal Caribbean’s Director of Product Innovation, confirmed the financial transaction was finalized after the Federal Economic Competition Commission (Cofece) approved the $221.3 million acquisition on June 5. The approval was granted under the condition that the company ensures equitable access for other cruise lines to maintain a competitive and open environment.

Employment and Infrastructure Commitments

Lanz Itzincab noted that concerns over job opportunities were addressed during the meeting. “They assured us there will be opportunities for both locals and external personnel involved in the construction and operation of the complex,” he said.

To handle increased demand for public services, a trust fund has been established, financed by $5 per cruise passenger. These funds will be allocated to infrastructure projects, including street lighting, drainage, potable water, and medical services. The amount will grow in proportion to tourist arrivals.

A citizen committee will oversee the allocation of these resources, and periodic working groups will be formed to ensure transparency.

Continued Operations and Future Plans

Royal Caribbean emphasized that this meeting was the first of many aimed at developing a sustainable tourism model benefiting both visitors and residents. Future discussions will include sector-specific meetings to provide updates and gather feedback.

The company confirmed that the pier will remain operational during renovations and that all cruise lines, not just Royal Caribbean, will continue docking in Mahahual. They also pledged to avoid monopolistic practices that characterized the previous administration.
