Sheinbaum Sues Guzmán’s Lawyer, Salinas Pliego Fires Back

Two political figures, one wearing a blue jacket and the other in a white shirt, during a public engagement.

Mexico City — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a defamation lawsuit against Jeffrey Lichtman, the attorney representing drug trafficker Ovidio Guzmán, sparking a sharp response from businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego. The legal action, disclosed during Sheinbaum’s morning press conference on July 14, has intensified political tensions and drawn public scrutiny.

The controversy stems from Lichtman’s remarks, in which he accused Sheinbaum of "sounding more like a spokesperson for drug cartels than a president." Sheinbaum swiftly condemned the statement, emphasizing the need to uphold respect for the presidency.

“We cannot normalize such language about the presidential office. The legal complaint is already being prepared by the Legal Counsel,” Sheinbaum stated.

The lawsuit marks an effort by the administration to set boundaries in public discourse regarding organized crime figures. However, critics, including Salinas Pliego, argue that the move distracts from pressing national issues.

Salinas Pliego’s Scathing Rebuke

Salinas Pliego, owner of Grupo Salinas, responded sarcastically on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Great, another enemy caught. Hopefully, they’d address real problems with the same energy.” His post included a list of what he described as neglected crises:

  • Fuel theft and lack of arrests
  • Child murders
  • Alleged money laundering in social programs
  • Mediocre public infrastructure results
  • Visa cancellations
  • Widespread insecurity
  • Legal proceedings involving the children of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán

The businessman’s critique reflects broader dissatisfaction with the government’s priorities, framing the lawsuit as a diversion from systemic challenges.

Escalating Political Feud

The clash between Sheinbaum and Salinas Pliego is not new but has grown increasingly public. Days earlier, Sheinbaum called out the businessman for misogynistic comments against journalists, prompting further exchanges.

The dispute highlights a battle over political narratives. While Sheinbaum seeks to defend her administration’s credibility, Salinas Pliego positions himself as a vocal critic demanding accountability.

The lawsuit against Lichtman raises questions about its broader implications. Supporters view it as a necessary defense of institutional dignity, while detractors, like Salinas Pliego, dismiss it as a tactical distraction.

As Mexico’s political landscape evolves, social media remains a key battleground for shaping public opinion. Both Sheinbaum and Salinas Pliego continue leveraging these platforms to advance their respective agendas.

The outcome of this legal and political confrontation could influence perceptions of governance and transparency in the months ahead.
