Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Four individuals suspected of extorting merchants at the Feria del Carmen 2025 were detained by officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security in coordination with the National Guard.

Citizen Report Leads to Arrests

The police intervention was prompted by a citizen report alerting authorities to suspicious activities involving illegal payments demanded from merchants and operators of mechanical games. The suspects allegedly demanded cash payments in exchange for allowing the operation of vendor stalls.

According to preliminary reports, the detainees may be connected to the irregular administration of gambling activities, including high-value prize games such as the traditional “bolita.” This has raised suspicions of an extortion network operating within the fair.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring a safe environment for visitors and vendors during the fair.
