Emergency responders near a fire truck at the scene of an incident, with bystanders observing.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A gas explosion in a tenement building in the Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta neighborhood left one man with burns covering 70 percent of his body, while a family of five was evacuated from the scene. Authorities reported the victim’s condition as serious.

Man in Flames Called for Help

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when residents heard a deafening explosion. Moments later, witnesses saw a man engulfed in flames calling for help. Bystanders rushed to assist him while emergency services were alerted.

Firefighters, paramedics, and officers from the Secretary of Citizen Security arrived within minutes at the building, located on Avenida 25 between Calles 78 and 80 in the Colosio neighborhood.

Gas Leak Suspected as Cause

Preliminary witness accounts suggested the injured man may have been under the influence of substances at the time of the incident, raising suspicions of reckless handling of a gas source. However, authorities indicated that a gas leak in the kitchen was the likely cause of the explosion.

During the emergency response, a family—two adults and three children—was evacuated from an adjacent room. None sustained injuries, though paramedics evaluated them on-site.
