Mexico City — President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has confirmed that a new customs law will be introduced in September as part of a broader strategy to combat corruption and improve efficiency in the sector. The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts to address systemic issues within Mexico’s customs operations.

New Law and Anti-Corruption Efforts

Responding to questions about corruption cases, President Sheinbaum emphasized that her administration is actively working to bring order to customs operations. She identified collusion between officials and those demanding illicit payments as a key challenge.

"Personally, I meet with all customs officials. This coming Monday, I will meet with those from the defense and navy sectors to analyze the problems at each customs checkpoint," Sheinbaum stated.

Increased Revenue and Operational Efficiency

The president highlighted that customs revenue has already increased by over 100 billion pesos this year. To ensure smoother trade operations without compromising necessary inspections, multiple agencies are collaborating on streamlining processes.

"We must improve efficiency across all customs procedures. The Digital Agency, the Navy, the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), and maritime authorities are all working on this," Sheinbaum said.

She reiterated the government’s commitment to advancing customs reforms, emphasizing that the new law will help establish order while maintaining revenue growth.

Summary of Key Measures

President Sheinbaum’s announcement outlines a comprehensive approach to modernizing Mexico’s customs system. The forthcoming law, set for September, aims to curb corruption, enhance operational efficiency, and sustain revenue increases through stricter oversight and interagency coordination.
