PUERTO AVENTURAS, MX — The sailing vessel named Fade Away ran aground yesterday afternoon in the rocky area bordering the inlet to the marina of Puerto Aventuras, a residential and tourist complex, south of Playa del Carmen.
A video circulating on social media shows the moment the small sailing yacht, a 34’ Hunter used for personalized charter excursions, was swept away by strong waves and thrown against the rocks in the bay, raising concerns among residents and nautical service providers.
So far, maneuvers are being carried out with the support of another vessel to try to tow the Fade Away and prevent it from being battered by the waves, which could worsen the damage to both the hull and the marine environment.
No injuries have been reported. The cause of the incident and whether the yacht had all the necessary permits and safety measures are currently unknown.
Port authorities and complex personnel are on site responding to the situation.

Navigational Challenges at Puerto Aventuras Marina
The entrance to Puerto Aventuras Marina is known for its narrow and shallow channel, flanked by rocky outcrops and coral reefs. This configuration demands precise navigation, especially during adverse weather conditions. Inexperienced operators or those unfamiliar with the local topography may find the approach particularly challenging.
In 2023, a sailboat ran aground near the marina entrance due to human error and a lack of area knowledge, highlighting the importance of local expertise when navigating these waters.
In recent years, there have been multiple incidents of vessels running aground in the vicinity. In one instance, a grounded boat had to be dismantled on-site due to extensive damage. After sitting on the rocks for days, it was considered a total loss.
Puerto Aventuras Marina
Established in the 1980s, Puerto Aventuras Marina was among the first resort communities developed along the Cancun-Tulum corridor. Its strategic location and access to the Mesoamerican Reef made it a hub for sport fishing and nautical tourism.
Despite its modern amenities, the marina’s entrance remains a navigational challenge. The combination of natural obstacles and variable sea conditions necessitates caution and local knowledge for safe passage.
