Sargassum Overwhelms Playa del Carmen: 200 Tons Removed Daily

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The municipal government, led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, has intensified cleanup and collection efforts to mitigate the environmental, tourism, and quality-of-life impacts of excessive sargassum arrivals on local beaches. Through the Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, an average of 200 tons of the seaweed are being removed daily in a coordinated effort involving federal, state, and municipal authorities.

Round-the-Clock Cleanup Operations

Samantha Álvarez, head of the municipal environmental agency, stated that a team of 101 workers is currently deployed across two daily shifts: the first from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the second from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The goal is to maintain clean and safe beaches for public use, though the influx this year has been exceptionally heavy.

To expedite the removal of the densely accumulated seaweed, seven excavators have been deployed. Since January, a total of 6,590 tons of sargassum have been collected in Playa del Carmen. Additionally, 203 tons of mixed trash—posing further risks to the ecosystem—have been cleared from the shores.

Persistent Challenge for Coastal Communities

Álvarez emphasized that daily collections now range between 150 and 200 tons, underscoring the scale of the problem and the need for sustained intervention. The coordinated efforts between municipal authorities, operational staff, and specialized machinery aim to curb the ecological and economic damage caused by the seasonal sargassum influx.

This initiative not only seeks to preserve Playa del Carmen’s tourism appeal but also to protect coastal ecosystems and local livelihoods.
