Río Lagartos, Yucatán — A recent alligator attack on fisherman Libardo Loría Cordero, known locally as “Chuno,” has raised alarms in this coastal community, marking an unprecedented incident in the area. Residents, accustomed to coexisting with the reptiles, say such an attack had never been reported before.

Sudden Attack on the Boardwalk

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning along the town’s boardwalk, where “Chuno” was washing his boat—a routine task for fishermen—while a companion cleaned fish and discarded entrails near an alligator lurking nearby. Without warning, the reptile lunged at Libardo, clawing his arm. Other fishermen rushed to his aid, using a piece of wood to drive the animal away and prevent a bite. The victim sustained open wounds and required 25 stitches but is now in stable condition. Locals speculate the alligator may have felt threatened and acted defensively.

Frequent Sightings, Rare Aggression

Alligator sightings are common in Río Lagartos, where the reptiles often wander streets or backyards near the surrounding wetlands. However, the attack has unsettled the community, particularly fishermen who regularly feed the creatures. Authorities temporarily closed the nearby Chiquilá swimming area over two months ago after three alligators were spotted, but no permanent preventive measures, such as protective nets, have been implemented.

Residents report that at least two alligators inhabit a cenote near the swimming area, occasionally approaching unnoticed by bathers. The incident has reignited concerns over safety in the region, where human-wildlife encounters remain a delicate balance.
