Grupo Piñero Launches Eco Awards in Mexico

Two individuals, a man and a woman, stand together smiling at an award ceremony, holding a decorative award plaque and trophy. Behind them, there is a tropical backdrop with palm trees and an ocean view.

Tulum, Mexico — Grupo Piñero celebrated the inaugural Mexican edition of the Los +Ecoístas Awards in Tulum, an initiative recognizing individuals, businesses, and institutions whose concrete actions demonstrate that caring for the planet also means caring for oneself. The event took place at Parque del Jaguar, one of the most emblematic conservation projects in the Mexican Caribbean, and brought together environmental authorities, business leaders, artists, and civil society representatives to honor commitments to sustainability.

A Prize Celebrating Those Who Sow the Future

The gala was marked by an inspiring message from Isabel Piñero, President of Grupo Piñero’s Family Council, who noted that the company marks 50 years of history with the conviction of paying tribute to those fighting for a healthier planet:

“Being ecoísta means looking beyond oneself—it means inheriting life. This event is an act of gratitude toward those who work every day for the well-being of the planet.”

In the same tone, Encarna Piñero, Global CEO of the group, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to a development model centered on people and the environment:

“We are not just handing out awards; we are delivering a message: it is possible to do business with respect, empathy, and collaboration.”

Fundación Eco-Bahía: 25 Years Protecting Life

One of the most emotional moments was the participation of Luis Verdín, manager of Fundación Eco-Bahía, who highlighted achievements such as the protection of over 2 million sea turtle hatchlings, coral reef restoration, and environmental education programs reaching more than 50,000 people.

“Beyond numbers, the true achievement has been building a community committed to caring for what we love,” he emphasized.

Art with Soul: An Award Inspired by Mayan Wisdom

In collaboration with SEDETUR, a contest was held to design the award for this edition. The winning piece, titled Rezador Maya, was created by Wendy Nallely Mex Dzib, a young artist from Tihosuco, using jícara and plant fibers. The work was recognized as a symbol of respect for the land and ancestral culture.

“Wendy transformed the soul of our roots into a tangible work,” said Lilian Villanueva, Secretary of Culture for Quintana Roo.

Six Exemplary Projects Receive the Los +Ecoístas Award

During the ceremony, six initiatives leading the way in sustainability in Mexico were recognized:

  • Grupo Bimbo, for its comprehensive approach across its value chain.
  • Flora y Fauna Grupo Xcaret, for its reforestation and coastal cleanup efforts.
  • The Seas We Love, for its fight against sargassum and promotion of the circular economy.
  • Granjas KAKI, for eliminating single-use plastics in its transportation.
  • Hotel ÚNICO 20°87°, for incorporating sustainable practices and strengthening local social fabric.
  • PASA (Promotora Ambiental), for mangrove conservation in Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.

A Commitment to Regenerative Tourism

The event was supported by officials such as Bernardo Cueto, state Secretary of Tourism, who highlighted the alliance with Grupo Piñero as part of the strategy for regenerative, inclusive, and human-centered tourism.

“We are not just rewarding companies; we are also giving a voice to the values we share as a society,” he stated.

Alonso Fernández Lemmen Meyer, Attorney for Environmental Protection, closed the evening with a call for personal commitment:

“Real change begins with thousands of individual decisions. May this celebration mark the start of a new way of inhabiting this paradise.”
