Cancún, Mexico — The Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation after shocking images of a brutal machete attack on a dog in Cancún went viral on social media. The case has sparked widespread outrage among citizens and prompted a rapid response from authorities and animal rescuers.
Details of the Attack
The incident was documented by the animal rescue organization Fundación Huellitas Alemán, where rescuer Orlando shared footage of finding the dog, named "Blue," hiding with multiple machete-inflicted wounds. The animal was discovered in the courtyard of a motel along Kabah Avenue, suffering from deep cuts to muscles and tissue as well as a fractured leg.
The Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Environmental Crimes, Wildlife, and Urban Development, in coordination with the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA), is conducting an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible. A search operation was also launched, leading to the discovery of the injured dog, who is now under veterinary care.
Rescue Efforts and Public Outrage
The case gained widespread attention after Fundación Huellitas Alemán shared the rescue on social media. Orlando, a well-known rescuer in Cancún, detailed the challenges of transporting Blue due to the severity of his injuries and the risk of the dog reacting aggressively out of fear.
Initial veterinary assessments revealed three machete wounds, one of which severely damaged muscle tissue, along with a fractured limb.
Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama confirmed Blue’s rescue and thanked citizens for reporting the incident and aiding in the search. "We want to make it clear that animal abuse is a crime in Quintana Roo. We will not tolerate it. Pets are not toys," she stated.
The governor also praised rescuers like Orlando, who risked his own safety to help the injured dog. "Thank you to those who report these acts and create positive awareness. We will protect all species. If you witness such cruelty, report it!" she urged.
The case continues to draw public condemnation as authorities work to hold the perpetrator(s) accountable.
