Tourist Van Crash on Cancún Highway Sparks Aerial Rescue

Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — A swift and coordinated emergency response enabled the aerial rescue of a critically injured individual after a tourist transport van overturned on Federal Highway 307 near the Royalton Hotel, en route from Cancún to Playa del Carmen. The accident occurred shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6.

Emergency Response Saves Life

Though the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, witnesses reported that the van lost control and overturned, leaving multiple passengers with injuries of varying severity.

Personnel from Civil Protection, Firefighters, paramedics, and the Playa del Carmen Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) arrived promptly to provide medical attention and assess the passengers’ conditions. The area was secured to facilitate rescue operations and prevent further incidents.

One passenger, in critical condition, was airlifted to General Hospital Zone No. 18 of the IMSS in Playa del Carmen. The SSC helicopter arrived within minutes to execute the aerial rescue.

Mayor Commends Rapid Coordination

Solidaridad Municipal President Estefanía Mercado praised the emergency response on social media, emphasizing the speed of the operation. “Every peso invested in security and civil protection is an investment in human lives,” she stated.

“This is how we respond in Playa del Carmen: swiftly, with coordination, and a commitment to saving lives,” Mercado wrote, acknowledging the joint efforts of all agencies involved.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of passengers or their medical statuses.
