Cancún, Quintana Roo — A mere six out of 201 gas stations in Quintana Roo are adhering to the national agreement capping the price of regular gasoline at 24 pesos per liter, according to recent inspections by Mexico’s Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco). The findings reveal widespread noncompliance, with 97% of stations charging above the mandated limit, particularly in high-traffic tourist areas.

Price Violations Concentrated in Key Destinations

The agreement, established by Mexico’s Energy Ministry (Sener), state oil company Pemex, and Profeco, aimed to mitigate the economic impact of global fuel market volatility. However, enforcement has faltered, with only three stations each in Felipe Carrillo Puerto and José María Morelos honoring the price ceiling.

Tourist-heavy municipalities show the most egregious overcharges for Magna (Regular) gasoline:

  • Benito Juárez (Cancún): 24.70 to 25.90 pesos per liter
  • Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen): 24.80 to 25.60 pesos
  • Tulum: Average of 25.50 pesos
  • Cozumel: Up to 25.80 pesos
  • Isla Mujeres: No stations comply
  • Othón P. Blanco (Chetumal): 24.30 to 25.20 pesos

Logistical Costs Cited, but Critics Blame Market Dynamics

Gas station operators attribute the price hikes to elevated logistical expenses. Consumer advocates, however, argue that limited competition and steady tourist demand enable unchecked pricing in the region. The inflated costs ripple through the local economy, raising transportation and goods distribution expenses while increasing the overall cost of living.

Despite Profeco’s inspections and public appeals, enforcement remains lax. The lack of punitive measures has fueled perceptions of impunity, underscoring the challenges of implementing national agreements in markets dominated by private interests.
