Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — As part of a historic 100 million peso investment in sports and recreation, Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado inaugurated the fully renovated Parque de la 90 in the El Pedregal neighborhood. The project, funded by the federal FAISMUN program, directly benefits thousands of children, youth, and elderly residents.
A Revitalized Public Space
"Today in El Pedregal, we are not just reclaiming a park and a sports court—we are reclaiming joy, community, and the right to enjoy public spaces. Let me be clear: public spaces are not a privilege; they are a right for everyone," Mayor Mercado stated during a tour of the renovated park.
The 4,961,611.69 peso renovation demonstrates that peace is built not only through security measures but also by revitalizing spaces that foster community, sports, and well-being.
Key Upgrades and Features
The upgraded Parque de la 90 now includes:
- A sloped concrete slab for the embankment
- Eco-friendly concrete paving for the bike path, gym area, and children’s playground
- A multi-purpose court and concrete skate park with ramps
- Four playground sets and an outdoor gym apparatus
- Two picnic tables and synthetic grass on the embankment
- Fresh paint and lighting for the sports dome
- A complete rehabilitation of the Pegaso Fire Station booth
The redesign ensures the park is fully accessible, inclusive, and functional for children, people with disabilities, youth, and seniors.
"Through sports, culture, and dignified spaces, we are sowing peace in every neighborhood. This court is not just cement, paint, and play equipment—it’s a tool for social transformation," Mayor Mercado added.
The renovation aligns with broader efforts to enhance public infrastructure and community engagement in Playa del Carmen.
