Cancún, Mexico — Human remains were discovered on a dirt road on the outskirts of Cancún on Thursday, April 17, marking the second such finding in the area within hours. Authorities confirmed the victim, an unidentified male, showed signs of gunshot wounds.
Body Discovered Near Colonia México
The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. near the Colonia México neighborhood, along a dirt path leading to the nearby community of Francisco May. Passersby reported seeing the body lying on the road, surrounded by a pool of blood near a wooded area. Emergency services, including municipal police and paramedics, arrived at the scene and confirmed the victim had no vital signs.
The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) was notified and launched an investigation into what is preliminarily classified as a homicide. Forensic personnel from the Medical Examiner’s Office (Semefo) later removed the body for an autopsy.
Earlier Discovery: Ritualistic Elements Suspected
The grim finding follows another earlier that day, when human remains—reportedly an arm and part of a spine—were found near Nichupté Lagoon in Cancún’s Hotel Zone. Witnesses near the Nizuc Bridge alerted authorities, prompting responses from the Tourist Police, National Guard, and FGE officials.
Initial reports suggest the remains may have been used in witchcraft rituals, though forensic analysis is ongoing. Semefo personnel collected the remains for further examination and identification.
Context of Violence
The discoveries underscore ongoing security challenges in the region. Cancún, a major tourist destination, has faced sporadic incidents of violence, though cases involving ritualistic elements remain rare.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the two incidents are related. Investigations into both cases continue.
