Boosting Beekeeping in Quintana Roo: Collaborative Groups Revitalize Sector

ALT TEXT

The beekeeping industry in Quintana Roo is set to be strengthened through the establishment of collaborative working groups. These groups aim to create a platform for dialogue and cooperation among producers, authorities, and experts. The goal is to identify challenges, opportunities, and solutions that promote sustainable development within the sector.

The Secretary of Agricultural, Rural, and Fishing Development (SEDARPE), Jorge Aguilar Osorio, announced this initiative. He noted that the first of these working groups recently convened at the Intercultural Maya University of Quintana Roo (UIMQROO), in the municipality of José María Morelos. This meeting followed the First Meeting for the Honey of Quintana Roo, which aimed to create suitable conditions and support for a prosperous and sustainable beekeeping industry in the state.

These working groups are part of the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, an initiative championed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. The agreement aims to lay the groundwork for promoting the production and economy of the beekeeping sector, thereby fostering shared prosperity in the region.

"The goal is to establish concrete lines of action for apiculture development programs up until the year 2026," stressed Aguilar Osorio. He also noted that the first meeting resulted in five work proposals to address the sector's challenges. The meeting saw the active participation of over 840 producers with a registered brand in the State.

Aguilar Osorio also announced that a second working group meeting is planned for early April in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The initiative aims to boost the production of the Melipona bee in municipalities including Felipe Carrillo Puerto, José María Morelos, Bacalar, Lázaro Cárdenas, Othón P. Blanco, Puerto Morelos, and Tulum.
