Chacchoben, a renowned archaeological site, has emerged as the second most popular tourist destination in Quintana Roo. This comes after the site reopened in December 2024, following extensive conservation and improvement efforts. In January 2025 alone, Chacchoben welcomed 29,382 visitors, as per the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) records.
Meanwhile, Ichkabal, another archaeological site, opened to the public on January 11. This was made possible through a collaboration between INAH and the local authorities of Bacalar. In its first month of operation, Ichkabal attracted 5,277 visitors, making it the fifth most visited site in the region.
El Meco, located in Puerto Juarez, Cancun, reopened on December 18, 2024, and secured the sixth position in visitor numbers, with a total of 3,847. These site reopenings are part of the Archaeological Zone Improvement Program (PROMEZA), which is associated with the Maya Train project. The program aims to bolster tourism and preserve the cultural heritage of the region.
Despite the rising popularity of these sites, Tulum remains the most visited archaeological site in the region.
