Solidaridad City Council Introduces Elections for Puerto Aventuras

The Solidaridad City Council has approved a call for elections to renew council members in the mayor's office of Puerto Aventuras. This includes the formation of collegiate bodies that will oversee the electoral process. The decision was made during the fourth ordinary session held yesterday.

The call for elections, set to conclude in December, will also establish the operating commission and the neighborhood assembly. These bodies will be responsible for monitoring the electoral process and conducting the elections. This will be the second constitutional election in which the second mayor will be chosen by a vote.

The current mayor, Gilberto Gómez, assumed office in April 2022. This followed the creation of a new mayor's office by the previous Solidaridad City Council, which serves as a decentralized entity of local public administration.

Orlando Muñoz, a councilor of the municipality of Solidaridad, urged the city council members to be flexible with the requirements for the elections. He noted that many of the necessary documents take time to be issued. Muñoz asked residents of Puerto de Aventuras who wish to participate in the election to wait for the official call. This will include the dates and requirements for the election, and will be published and disseminated through various legal channels.

The Operating Commission, responsible for overseeing the electoral process, consists of high-ranking officials in the Solidaridad government. They will have oversight duties, problem-solving abilities, and will act as the liaison with the Solidaridad City Council. Uri Carmona Islas, a councilor member of this commission, stated that their goal is to ensure peaceful elections.

Puerto Aventuras, located about 30 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, has a population of around 40,000. Most residents are engaged in tourist activities in the various establishments along the Riviera Maya.
