Cancún, Mexico — A banking institution is providing 225 million pesos in financing for sustainable tourism initiatives in Quintana Roo, with a significant portion dedicated to the state's designated "Pueblos Mágicos."
Of the total funding, 150 million pesos are earmarked specifically for these Magical Towns, while 75 million pesos are focused on promoting point-of-sale terminals to help destinations increase their sales.
Fernández de Mazarambroz, Director of Corporate and Institutional Banking and Head of Sustainability at BBVA, announced that work is being done in the Mexican Caribbean to help destinations increase their sales channels. This is being achieved through training in both marketing and financial culture, as well as through tools that allow them to operate digitally and increase their earnings by accepting card payments.
"This has been achieved through the digital banking of income, payments, and collections for around 926 Quintana Roo-based MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises)," he added.
The executive explained that the financing includes a sustainability component, which involves establishing commitments for companies to fulfill in order to maintain their credit and access better interest rates over time. The purpose is to make tourism businesses more sustainable through the purchase of electric vehicles, improvements in energy efficiency, or investment in companies with green practices.
This initiative is aimed particularly at destinations with the Pueblos Mágicos designation, such as Tulum, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, and Bacalar.
Nationally, this banking institution has disbursed 423 billion pesos in sustainable financing. By 2026, this figure is projected to increase to 536 billion pesos, with a total of 10,500 SMEs financed through these schemes.
This information was released during the Second Quintana Roo Sustainability Forum 2025, which was held in Cancún. The forum served as a space for dialogue convening the private sector, the public sector, civil society, academics, and students to discuss what has been achieved and what remains to be done to foster sustainable destinations, considering it an urgent need in places like Quintana Roo.
