YUCATÁN, Mexico — This Saturday, September 20, 14 beaches across 10 coastal municipalities in Yucatán will be the site of a simultaneous community cleanup day. The event, convened by the State Government, is part of its strategy for environmental protection and the promotion of responsible tourism.

The effort, titled "More Volunteers, Less Waste," is part of the third edition of the mega coastal cleanup. It aims not only to collect garbage but also to foster a culture of environmental care among the population.

Coastal Communities Ready to Participate

In El Cuyo, the activity will be carried out under the slogan "Let's Clean El Cuyo," with the support of the municipal Directorate of Tourism, civil associations, and local volunteers. The meeting point will be the main pier at 7:30 a.m., and citizens are invited to participate by wearing comfortable clothing, sunscreen, and sufficient water to stay hydrated.

In the eastern zone of the state, the municipality of Tizimín will coordinate the cleanup of the beaches in Río Lagartos, Cancunito, and Las Coloradas. The Director of Ecology and Sustainable Development, biologist José Cruz Hoil Rajón, reported that preparations are underway to ensure an orderly and effective participation.

The other participating beaches include localities in the municipalities of Celestún, Hunucmá, Progreso, Telchac Puerto, Dzidzantún, Yobaín, Sinanché, and Dzilam de Bravo, expanding the reach of this collective action.

An Initiative with Growing Impact

Since its inception in 2022, the mega cleanup has demonstrated a notable impact. In its first edition, more than 1,100 volunteers collected approximately 3.8 tons of waste. By 2023, the number of participants exceeded 2,100, with more than 4.6 tons of trash removed from the coasts.

In 2025, the goal is to once again surpass 2,000 volunteers and continue strengthening environmental awareness among the inhabitants and visitors of the region.

Commitment to the Environment and Sustainable Tourism

The event represents an opportunity for citizens, authorities, organizations, and tourists to collaborate in the conservation of marine ecosystems, whose health is key to biodiversity and to the economic activities of coastal communities.

With these actions, the Government of Yucatán reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development, promoting a respectful relationship with the natural environment and a tourism model that prioritizes social and environmental responsibility.
