Mérida, Yucatán — Health officials in Yucatán reported the state’s first human death involving a diagnosis of screwworm myiasis, though they emphasized the patient’s pre-existing medical conditions caused the fatality.
The Yucatán Health Department (SSY) announced Tuesday night that a woman with complex pre-existing health conditions died after being diagnosed with the rare parasitic infection caused by the screwworm fly larvae. Officials confirmed the presence of the condition but said the death resulted from her underlying comorbidities, which critically compromised her health.
From the moment she entered medical care, the patient received specialized treatment according to established clinical protocols. Authorities simultaneously activated epidemiological surveillance mechanisms to analyze, report, and monitor the case.
Health authorities stressed this represents an isolated incident that poses no general risk to the population. They have reinforced epidemiological surveillance and prevention measures, including early detection and medical care, particularly for vulnerable groups.
The department also urged residents to closely monitor companion animals, especially dogs, and immediately report any suspected presence of screwworm larvae.
Yucatán has recorded more than 1,500 cases of screwworm myiasis to date, with 95 percent occurring in livestock.
