Yucatan Peninsula States Collaborate on Clean Energy Strategy at Expo

Officials from Quintana Roo, Yucatan, and Campeche participate in a panel discussion at the Expo Eléctrica Peninsular 2026 in Mérida.

Mérida, Yucatan — Officials from Quintana Roo, Yucatan, and Campeche convened at the Expo Eléctrica Peninsular 2026 to strengthen regional cooperation on clean energy development and sustainability.

The panel, titled “Joint Government Work in the Peninsular Energy Sector,” took place at the Siglo XXI Convention and Exhibition Center in Mérida. It aimed to foster a more efficient and sustainable energy sector benefiting residents across the Yucatan Peninsula.

Óscar Rébora Aguilera, head of Quintana Roo’s Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA), highlighted the state’s progress in implementing distributed photovoltaic generation strategies. These efforts seek to mitigate high electricity costs for citizens and bolster the region’s power transmission infrastructure.

“Promoting energy efficiency in strategic sectors like tourism is key, always with a focus on conserving coastal ecosystems vital to our economy and natural heritage,” Rébora said.

The forum emphasized collaborative work among the three states as a strategic priority. Their environmental secretariats are aligning to enhance ecological planning tools at municipal, regional, and state levels. This aims to ensure energy infrastructure installations meet sustainability, territorial planning, and environmental protection criteria.

Participants included representatives from the Campeche Energy Agency, SEMA, Campeche’s Secretariat of Environment, and the Yucatan Energy Agency. They agreed on the need for a permanent collaborative agenda to address energy security, innovation, and sustainable development in the peninsula.

The Yucatan Peninsula holds significant potential for clean energy development in Mexico, officials noted. Balancing energy sector growth with natural resource preservation is crucial for advancing an economic model that ensures a sustainable future.
