Mérida, Yucatán — Yucatán’s population of 2,382,868 people includes growing numbers of residents born in other Mexican states and foreign countries, with migration accelerating in recent years as newcomers settle across various municipalities.
People from other Mexican states primarily establish themselves in Mérida and its metropolitan zone, reflecting the area’s rapid urban growth. Municipalities like Kanasín, Conkal, Umán and Progreso have seen notable expansion of housing developments and subdivisions driven by constant population influx.
Meanwhile, foreign residents have not only settled in Mérida but also gravitated toward coastal areas like Progreso and its surrounding communities such as Chicxulub and Chelem, attracted by maritime access and warm climate. Others have chosen Valladolid for its quieter lifestyle and direct connections to Yucatecan culture.
The foreign community, led by Americans, Canadians, Cubans and Venezuelans, continues to grow strongly throughout the state.
