The Yook’ol Kaab planetarium in Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo, is nearly ready to reopen its doors on August 8th. The planetarium has undergone extensive renovations, including the utilization of previously wasted spaces, updates to museum displays, and improvements in accessibility for all visitors. The aim is to ensure that everyone who visits the planetarium has a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa recently toured the facility alongside Cristopher Malpica Morales, the head of the Quintana Roo Council of Humanities, Sciences, and Technology (Coqhcyt). They inspected the progress of the renovation and refurbishment works, which are expected to contribute significantly to social well-being in the state capital.
The governor revealed that the project cost 13.8 million pesos and included upgrades to the sanitary and electrical installations. She highlighted the new furniture and equipment, inclusive restrooms, and the addition of an elevator to ensure accessibility to the astronomical terrace for people with disabilities.
A video shared by the governor showcased the new makerspace, a creative learning area designed to help children and teenagers develop their technological, programming, design, and construction skills. This space will offer educational workshops on robotics, visual programming, and introduction to aerospace technology.
The renovations also included the installation of a Lego room where children can learn about robotics through play. This room, along with a new public internet point, will be open to visitors following the inauguration.
In an effort to minimize the planetarium's environmental impact, solar panels have been installed to power the new air conditioning units in the common areas, cafeteria, and newly refurbished offices.
The governor emphasized the importance of these upgrades in preparation for the upcoming 50th anniversary of the state and the 13th anniversary of the Yook’ol Kaab Planetarium. The planetarium is regarded as the most significant science education space in the southern part of the state.
