Xtampú: The Pink Waters Near Mérida That Aren’t Las Coloradas

Dzemul, Yucatán — As Yucatán prepares for an influx of tourists during the 2026 Holy Week holiday, visitors seeking the region’s famous pink waters have an alternative to the well-known Las Coloradas: the lesser-known salt flats of Xtampú.

Located in the municipality of Dzemul, about an hour’s drive from Mérida via the road to Progreso port, Xtampú features an artisanal salt flat with strikingly pink waters, similar to those at Las Coloradas in eastern Yucatán. The coloration results from high salinity and microorganisms, with the most intense hues visible between March and May.

The site offers tours, access to a designated pond for exfoliation, salt sales, and picturesque scenery surrounded by mangroves, making it popular for photography enthusiasts. A visitor on TikTok shared, “We ventured to Xtampú, an incredible place. Tell me where I should go on my next adventure.”

Admission costs 20 pesos per person, with an additional 30 pesos for entry to the exfoliation pond. Limited parking is available on-site. From nearby Telchac Puerto, a mototaxi can transport visitors for approximately 300 pesos.
