Chetumal — Fishermen from the coastal community of Xcalak have expressed concern after detecting the presence of boats from Belize carrying out sport fishing activities within waters belonging to Mexico.
According to testimonies from residents involved in fishing, the foreign boats were observed operating in areas that are part of the zones traditionally used by local fishing cooperatives. The vessels were documented while practicing fly fishing.
The fishermen pointed out that these actions generate discontent among those who depend on fishing and tourism associated with this practice, as they consider it an activity carried out without authorization in areas used by the inhabitants of Xcalak.
Although the exact date of the sighting was not specified, the complainants indicated that the vessels were spotted within the Mexican side of the coast. They stated this represents a situation that must be addressed by the relevant authorities.
In addition to the territorial issue, the fishermen warned that these incursions could also affect the region's environmental balance. Fly fishing is promoted in this area of the Mexican Caribbean under conservation schemes, aimed at protecting species and ensuring the activity's sustainability.
Residents of the community indicated that, due to its proximity to the maritime border, constant vigilance is necessary to prevent these types of situations. They asserted that the lack of frequent patrols makes it easier for vessels from the neighboring country to enter Mexican territory without official permits.
