Tulum, Quintana Roo — A woman was struck and killed early this morning on Federal Highway 307 at kilometer 239 near the Casa Tortuga complex. Authorities say the driver responsible fled the scene and remains unidentified.
According to initial reports, the woman attempted to cross the high-traffic highway when she was hit by an unknown vehicle. Motorists alerted emergency services, and an ambulance from Hospital Tulum arrived shortly afterward. Paramedics confirmed the victim showed no signs of life.
The area was secured by the National Guard’s Regional Security and Roads Divisions, who preserved the scene while awaiting forensic personnel and investigators. As of now, officials have no confirmed details about the vehicle involved — including color, model or license plates. Authorities are gathering witness statements and reviewing possible video footage from nearby businesses and surveillance cameras.
The Akumal–Tulum stretch of Highway 307 is notoriously dangerous. According to regional media, “death and destruction are running rampant” on this corridor, with serious accidents occurring frequently. One travel news report ranks this highway among the most perilous in Mexico, citing more than 400 fatal crashes in a single year.
Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the lack of safe pedestrian crossings, poor lighting, irregular signage, and heavy truck traffic. This latest fatality underscores a long-standing safety risk that remains unaddressed.
Authorities are urging any witnesses to come forward and provide information that might assist in locating the driver responsible.
