Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A woman identified as Odalys “N” has been formally charged with attempted homicide after a string of violent attacks in downtown Playa del Carmen left two international tourists hospitalized in intensive care.
Authorities say Odalys “N” used an ice pick—not a syringe, as initially reported—to stab a young woman from Hawaii and an Italian man. Both suffered punctured lungs. The Italian victim’s condition was deemed especially grave, prompting prosecutors to bring charges of attempted homicide. The case involving the Hawaiian tourist remains filed as “injuries,” though her family is considering expanding the complaint.
Witnesses described the assaults as unprovoked, taking place in different areas of the tourist zone, including the Gonzalo Guerrero neighborhood and around Fifth Avenue. Medical staff confirmed at least four other people had previously been injured under similar circumstances.
Odalys “N” was transferred to the Cancún state prison following her latest arrest. Despite speculation about possible psychiatric issues, officials said a medical evaluation found no incapacitating condition. A person familiar with the case claimed she appeared coherent when sober but may have been under the influence of strong drugs at the time of the attacks.
Residents of Quintas del Carmen and Gonzalo Guerrero expressed outrage, noting the suspect had been detained and released earlier this year after similar incidents. They are now demanding strict judicial action and stronger safety measures in the tourist district.
Both victims remain in intensive care but are reported to be in stable condition as they recover from their injuries.
