Cancún, Quintana Roo — A woman reported being threatened and assaulted by a taxi driver in Cancún after he deviated from the agreed route, according to authorities. The victim managed to escape and seek help at a gas station, where she received medical attention and filed a formal complaint.

The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Tuesday when the woman boarded a taxi from the Andrés Quintana Roo union, a Nissan Attitude vehicle, on Ruta 4 Avenue at Tulum Avenue. Shortly after, the driver unexpectedly changed the route and drove into less-traveled streets in the Región 230 area along Leona Vicario Avenue.

The woman said the driver threatened her with what appeared to be a firearm and attempted to physically assault her during the ride. The vehicle continued to the Región 231 area, where she managed to get out and escape.

Disoriented and in shock, she ran to a gas station at Torcacita Avenue and Talleres Street, where employees and bystanders provided immediate assistance and called authorities.

Municipal police and traffic officers, who were participating in the Operation Blindaje security initiative, arrived at the scene and activated the appropriate protocol. Red Cross paramedics evaluated the victim at the location before she was referred to the State Prosecutor’s Office, specifically the specialized unit for crimes against women, to file a formal complaint.

Personnel from the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (GEAVIG) provided support and conducted initial procedures.

The driver, described as a man with dark complexion between 25 and 32 years old, has not been apprehended. Authorities have launched an investigation to locate the vehicle and find the suspect.

The case has raised renewed concerns about safety in Cancún’s public transportation, particularly during nighttime hours, and has revived public demands for strengthened controls and protection mechanisms for women using taxi services.
