Cancun, Quintana Roo — A woman identified as Mayra Alejandra “N” has been formally charged in connection with an extortion scheme targeting a domestic worker in Cancun, prosecutors said.
According to the investigation, on June 9, a domestic worker received a phone call from a man who claimed her employer was in danger. The caller demanded she gather valuables and hand them over to prevent harm to the victim, even initiating a video call to intensify the threats.
The worker was forced to enter a room, collect belongings, and pack them into a suitcase. She then left the home and handed the luggage to a ride-share driver, who took it to the Supermanzana 48 area. There, the suitcase was allegedly received by Mayra Alejandra “N,” who is accused of participating in the theft. Under continued threats, the victim later sent a second suitcase.
The Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Kidnapping and Extortion executed an arrest warrant against the suspect on June 13. Following a hearing, a judge ordered her to stand trial and imposed two years of pretrial detention, or for the duration of the legal proceedings.
