Winjet Drops 9 p.m. Cozumel Ferry, Narrowing Options for Late Travelers

Winjet Ferries at Cozumel Muelle

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Winjet has suspended its 9 p.m. ferry crossing between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, reducing late-evening travel options for residents and visitors during the tourism low season.

The change took effect Monday, October 12. Winjet cited low passenger numbers and the cost of operating the late sailing, according to reports on the schedule adjustment. It has not announced when the service might return.

A social media post about the suspension also refers to a 9 a.m. crossing, but that appears to be an error. Winjet’s published timetable for October 14 still shows a 9 a.m. departure in both directions and no 9 p.m. departure. On that date, its last listed sailing leaves Cozumel for Playa del Carmen at 7 p.m.; its last sailing in the opposite direction leaves Playa del Carmen for Cozumel at 8 p.m.

For travelers, the shorter evening schedule leaves less room for a dive trip that runs late, dinner on the island or delays getting to the terminal. Someone returning to Cozumel after an evening on the mainland faces the same calculation. Missing the final available ferry could mean staying overnight.

The adjustment follows another early-October schedule cut: Xcaret Xailing suspended its 6:30 a.m. departure from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen. That change drew concern from island residents who use the ferry to reach work or school on the mainland. Reports indicate other operators have also reduced some late crossings, although the available information does not establish that every 9 p.m. option on the route has ended.

The reduced sailings bring a familiar low-season tension into focus. Ferry companies must weigh operating costs against demand, while Cozumel residents depend on the same route for work, education, appointments and other essential trips. The companies report schedule changes to the Quintana Roo Port Administration, Apiqroo, but no date has been announced for restoring Winjet’s 9 p.m. crossing.

Passengers should check the current timetable for their travel date and direction, rather than relying on a general “last ferry” time. Winjet warns that its published schedules can change without prior notice.
