WhatsApp Ends Support for Old Phones in 2025

WhatsApp has announced a new update to its requirements that will leave multiple phone models without support starting December 1, 2025, as they can no longer meet the platform’s security standards and advanced features. This measure will impact users worldwide, including those using WhatsApp Business for sales and customer service.

Why WhatsApp Will Stop Functioning on Some Phones

Meta explained that the adjustment aims to maintain the service’s integrity, strengthen security, and enable more modern features that require updated operating systems and hardware. This means that older devices will not be able to run new versions of the app, which could eventually lead to failures or the inability to log in.

Phones That Will Be Left Out Starting December 1, 2025

From that date, WhatsApp will no longer be compatible with systems such as:

  • Android 5.1 or earlier versions
  • iOS 11 or earlier versions

Although the exact list of models varies by manufacturer and region, all devices with these platforms will be without updates and may lose access to chats, groups, and notifications. For those who rely on WhatsApp Business, this could result in interruptions in communication channels, sales, and customer support.

What Will Happen to Affected Users?

The end of compatibility implies that:

  • The app may stop opening or functioning correctly.
  • Messages and groups could be interrupted.
  • The associated number may require immediate migration to a more recent device.

WhatsApp recommends acting before the deadline to avoid losing access to the account.

How to Avoid Being Left Without WhatsApp

  1. Check Your Operating System: Confirm if your phone runs Android 5.1, iOS 11, or a previous version. If so, consider updating the software or changing devices.
  2. Update the App from Official Stores: Keeping the application up to date reduces failures and ensures compatibility with new features.
  3. Make a Backup: Before migrating your account, perform a cloud backup to preserve chats, photos, and contacts.
  4. Avoid Unofficial Clients: Besides security risks, their use can cause permanent suspension of your account.
  5. Businesses: Prepare Alternative Channels: If you use WhatsApp Business, inform your customers and enable alternatives such as email, social media, or other messaging systems during the transition.

Other Relevant WhatsApp Updates

In addition to the support cut, WhatsApp continues to implement important improvements:

  • New tools and controls in groups and video calls
  • Expanded functions in broadcast channels
  • Updates in WhatsApp Business, including adjustments in pricing policies
  • Integration of artificial intelligence to automate processes and personalize interactions

These innovations require more robust devices and updated systems, which is why the platform is leaving older models behind.
