Quintana Roo, Mexico — The annual whale shark season has commenced in Quintana Roo, drawing tourists from across Mexico and abroad to witness these majestic marine creatures. The municipality of Isla Mujeres, a prime location for sightings, marks the start of this highly anticipated event, which officially begins on Thursday, May 15.
Where to Observe Whale Sharks
Whale shark observation and swimming activities in the Caribbean region are regulated by the management programs of Protected Natural Areas. In Yum Balam, activities are permitted 30 minutes after sunrise until 2:00 p.m. Meanwhile, in the Mexican Caribbean Biosphere Reserve and the Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve, the designated hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
According to NOM-171-SEMARNAT-2018, only boats up to 11 meters (36 feet) in length are allowed for these excursions. The maximum number of passengers per vessel will be determined by its size.
Prohibited Activities During Whale Shark Season
Strict regulations are in place to protect the whale sharks and their habitat. The following actions are prohibited:
- Using sunscreen or tanning lotions.
- Harassing, touching, riding, or harming the whale sharks in any way.
- Blocking the sharks' path with boats or swimmers.
- Using propulsion motors or smaller paddle vessels (such as kayaks, dinghies, lifeboats, or underwater scooters) for swimming near the sharks.
- Utilizing selfie sticks, flashes, artificial lights in the water, recording devices, mobile phones, or any equipment that generates noise or sound that may disturb the animals or other visitors.
- Disposing of any waste, as well as collecting, capturing, fishing, or transporting specimens, parts, or derivatives of wildlife.

Whale sharks are a significant draw for tourism in Quintana Roo, particularly in Isla Mujeres, where they arrive annually. Visitors planning to experience this natural spectacle are advised to schedule their trips accordingly and familiarize themselves with the guidelines to ensure a safe and respectful encounter with these gentle giants.
