Virtual Kidnapping Foiled in Quintana Roo Rescue

Authorities responding to a virtual kidnapping incident in Quintana Roo

Authorities in Quintana Roo thwarted a virtual kidnapping and extortion following an anonymous report made through the 089 line, which prompted the immediate activation of emergency protocols. The alert notified the Centurión Anti-Extortion Group of a risky situation involving nine people allegedly deprived of their liberty.

According to official information, a worker at his home began receiving intimidating calls from an unknown number. The criminals threatened him and demanded the deposit of a large sum of money in exchange for the supposed release of his employees, causing panic among the victims.

The Nine People Were Locked In and Intimidated with Threatening Calls

Thanks to the rapid intervention of security forces, authorities managed to locate the victims. They were locked in a room, receiving constant calls in which they were psychologically pressured to maintain communication and follow the extortionists’ instructions, a common tactic in virtual kidnappings.

Fortunately, all individuals were found safe and sound, without the criminals managing to complete the demanded deposit.

Authorities Urge Not to Answer Unknown Numbers and to Report

The Secretariat of Citizen Security reiterated the call to the population to avoid falling victim to this type of crime. They recommend not answering calls from unknown numbers and, if answered, to hang up immediately, block the contact, and report it to 089.

Authorities emphasize that the 089 line is anonymous, free, and available 24 hours a day, and that citizen reporting continues to be a fundamental tool in combating extortion and virtual kidnappings in the state.
