Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo – The beginning of 2026 has left the municipality submerged in a climate of anxiety and violence that has broken the tranquility of the Maya zone. In just three weeks, the city and its communities have been the scene of illegal deprivations of liberty, police pursuits, road blockades, and military operations, events that highlight the fragility of public security.
Among the relevant incidents of the first month of the year, on January 9, a young man was deprived of his liberty and found beaten and handcuffed in Ramonal, municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, near the Vía Corta to Mérida, Yucatán.
On January 19, a police pursuit was recorded on the streets of the city of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, which concluded with detainees and material damage in the city center.
On January 22, the detention of Shadani Lorena “N”, considered a priority target of the state’s Delictive Atlas, triggered blockades, disturbances, and a deployment of federal forces from Chunhuhub to Chetumal.
Residents report that violence has taken hold on the streets and rural roads of the Maya zone. Additionally, the blockades and disturbances have affected mobility and commercial activity; insecurity discourages the arrival of visitors, hitting the local economy.
Felipe Carrillo Puerto began 2026 with a balance of fear, blockades, and pursuits. Violence imposes itself as the true authority in the Maya zone, while institutions limit themselves to reacting without guaranteeing security or confidence to citizens, and its municipal president, Maricarmen Hernández Solís, remains at Fitur 2026 in Madrid, Spain.
