Quintana Roo, Mexico — The honorary president of DIF Quintana Roo, Verónica Lezama Espinosa, in conjunction with the CIMA Foundation, has delivered 670 prescription glasses to elementary school children across several municipalities in the state. The initiative aims to improve the visual health and well-being of Quintana Roo's youth.
These actions form part of the health brigades of the national strategy "Healthy Life," promoted by the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. With the support of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, visual acuity assessments were conducted for students in primary schools across the municipalities of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar, Benito Juárez, and Othón P. Blanco. The objective is to ensure children have better visual health, thereby strengthening their learning.
During these assessment sessions, various visual impairments were identified that affect both the students' quality of life and their academic performance.
The first delivery occurred in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, where 182 prescription glasses were provided to students from eight schools. In the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, 216 glasses were delivered to students from 11 schools. In Bacalar, 102 students from five schools received glasses, and in Benito Juárez, 170 glasses were given to children. This brought the total to 670 glasses delivered.
In her message, the president of the State DIF, Verónica Lezama, highlighted that a significant proportion of school-age children have undiagnosed visual difficulties, which can affect their ability to read, write, and observe their school environment.
“Therefore, we must prioritize and address the visual health of girls and boys to guarantee their well-being and equal opportunities in education. At DIF Quintana Roo, we work wholeheartedly to ensure they have the necessary tools to learn, grow, and fulfill their dreams, because a pair of glasses can change the way they see the world and also the way the world opens up to them. We will continue to promote actions that improve their future,” she stated.
With these combined efforts, DIF Quintana Roo reaffirms its commitment to continue promoting programs that foster the well-being, health, and comprehensive development of the state's children, in coordination with institutions, foundations, and civil society.
The deliveries were attended by the general director of DIF, Abril Sabido Alcérreca; the director of the Foundation and Sustainability of Grupo CIMA, Tania Silvina Loya Fierro; the director of Health and Comprehensive and Visual Care, Lourdes Aimeé Zapata Oliva; and authorities from the Ministry of Education of Quintana Roo.
